Strengthen Donor Trust Through Technology September 1, 2023 by Kristen Beireis Thinking in: Non Profit Tips, Strategy Imagine going to an amusement park and you’re excited for a day of fun! The signage getting into the park is confusing and you spend 15 minutes just figuring out how to access the parking lot. As you approach the entrance, you can ALMOST read the name of the park over the entrance as the sign is fading. You start making your way to the first roller coaster and you notice the wood seems to need a paint job. As you approach the line area, you take a look around and don’t see any staff. Hmmm…. After waiting a few minutes, a staff member comes out of a little hut and looks confused to see you. They invite you into the coaster and go back to the operating platform. It looks like they are reading from a manual as to how to start the coaster. Do you still want to be there? This amusement park has a big swing and a miss on ease of use for signage, processes for training, and in keeping the park updated. Each one of these takes that trust level down a notch. While this coaster may be well maintained and work safely, the experience leading up to this moment isn’t convincing. Your organization may be the most fiscally responsible and the best at what you do, but does your technology reflect that and strengthen donor trust? It’s important to create an innovative website, personalized communication, and seamless donation experiences to strengthen donor trust and empower them to take an active role in your mission. Provide a User-Friendly Donation Experience The online donation experience is often the first and most frequently revisited contact point. When the donation form is easy to find on your website and other digital outlets, donors are more likely to follow through. Donors appreciate the convenience of user-friendly donation forms that automatically populate their information from past interactions. They also appreciate a simple, easy, modern looking form that only asks the most pertinent information. These updated features minimize friction and enhance user experience by prioritizing ease of giving. Just as clear signage makes it easy to find the entrance of an amusement park. Enable Transparency You probably have a digital process for tracking and reporting donor activities. Using that data to build a website portal designed for donors to easily access all their information, adds transparency. A portal allows them to see how their contributions are making a tangible difference through detailed financial reports, project updates, and impact metrics. When donors can see how their support directly aligns with your mission, it engenders trust and empowers donors to follow through on their giving. Just as seeing a solid coat of paint on a roller coaster reassures you that it’s well-maintained. Personalize Communications Personalize communications based on past interactions and contributions through automations and strategic processes for data collection. You can send targeted messages, acknowledging their support and keeping them informed about projects that align with their interests. Personalization demonstrates that you value their involvement, fostering a sense of connection and trust. Just as having an attentive, knowledgeable roller coaster operator fosters a sense of trust as you jump in to enjoy the ride. Use Technology to Build Trust Donors will trust your organization as vital partners in the journey toward a better world when your technology provides an easy, well-maintained, and personal experience. Is your technology set up to strengthen donor trust or is it like the amusement park that needs some sprucing up?
